Lutein - Vision & Blue Light Defense

I've taken one of these daily for over two weeks and it's time to write my review. I've been using supplements for eye health for years so I'm well-versed on much of the relevant science and our needs. Astaxanthin is a star in this pill and what will make a difference for most people that can get a boost from a supplement. Lutein and zeaxanthin are also of great benefit even though many or most of us concerned get sufficient amounts from our diets. There are other ingredients that can be gotten in a pill and this one does not have it all for those who are older with specific concerns. But I think it's advisable, especially if one can afford it, to start taking a supplement like this in middle-age even without any vision or eye issue. Astaxanthin is an anti-inflammatory that targets the eyes and can effectively reduce inflammation there like ibuprofen. It is possible to have periodic low-grade eye inflammation that causes real problems that an ophthalmologist will not be able to identify. I am stopping taking this supplement daily as I already take these ingredients and will use the remaining pills for days when I expect the most stress on my eyes which for me is generally related to activity and environments where my eyes get blurry.

Nice combination of ingredients that all contribute to good eye health. Lutein acts as a blue light filter, reduces glare and protects against macular degeneration and cataracts . Astaxanthin lessens eye strain, helps with focus, and helps prevent macular degeneration. Zeaxanthin is a blue light filter and reduces damage from oxidation and AMD. (age related macular degeneration). All 3 ingredients are antioxidants. I am pleased that among other trace ingredients is extra virgin olive oil, non GMO vegetable glycerine and purified water. This seems to be a healthy formula. I am comfortable taking this product without worrying that I am introducing anything harmful into my body. The softgels are very small and easy to swallow.

These gels are small and very easy to use and swallow with no aftertaste. When I say ‘gels’ these are not your typical soft gel, but feel much harder. It was strange opening the bottle and seeing the contents only just covering the very bottom of the bottle, but I guess the bottle has to be bigger so you can read the directions/ingredients etc.I’m no expert on how much of each ingredient you need, but I do like the look of what is in here. It appears to be well researched and after taking these for a week (as I write) I am noticing benefits. So far, so good.

At a price point of 21.99 for 30 soft gel tablets, it is a good value. This product also gives an extra benefit of enhancing sleep quality.

This is a good combination of supplements I usually have to take individually. It is good for eye health and anti-aging. I like that this supplement lists the sources of its ingredients. The regular astaxanthin I use is sourced from salmon. This comes from seaweed. I make sure I store mine in a cool dry place and not in the bathroom with shower steam. The softly capsules are small and easy to swallow. I can take this on an empty stomach without getting nauseas. The carrier oil is EVOO, which is excellent! Made in the USA.

Even as a retired person I am spending 6-8 hours in front of screen one way or another. This has the eye health support that is recommended for blue light eye strain so this is great.These pills are very tiny so they are easy to swallow even without fluids. There is no taste and no digestion issues either. It's pretty much impossible if it's doing it's thing, but I'm assuming that it's helping and will continue to take these. I will likely find another brand with the same herbs in it at the same level that is less expensive. As far as I can tell these are significantly more expensive than others. Still, in this day and age when we are all spending time in front of some of screen it's a good thing to have on your supplements list.

Honestly, with these types of supplement products, it's a bit difficult to judge their effectiveness at eye support, but they seem effective, as my eye health has not gotten worse, although 30 pills is not a massive amount of time to test. The pills are pretty small, so they cause no pain when going down. At around 75 cents a pill, it's not terribly expensive for supplements like this, but I'd prefer a lower price. Overall, it's around market value, so I'd say they're fair value for money, without being a great deal.

It surprises how often people review supplements, either touting their efficacy or berating the lack thereof, as if there were some objective result that you could look at and say I took these pills or capsules or whatever and now I'm 10 inches taller or I have a full head of hair when last week I was bald. But they do. I don’t. The key really is the word itself - “supplement.” These are not medication or magic beans, not this supplement nor any other. So, I try them and I hope that maybe they’ll help, hope they won’t make things worse, but I’m never sure if this is the cause of anything, good or bad, when it is such a small part of the equation, which also, for me and everyone, includes other supplements, meds, when, what, how you eat, sleep, stress, exercise, even weather and interpersonal relationships and myriad other things.

This Lutein supplement works as well as the ones I normally take, with a couple of extra ingredients and suspended in virgin olive oil. These are potentially healthier with holistic ingredients. They are slightly more expensive than my staple brand that I buy routinely. The soft gels are small and easy to swallow. One a day makes these a 1 month supply.

So this supplement contains two of the things that are present in the recommended AREDS 2 formula for eye support and to (theoretically/hopefully) prevent or slow macular degeneration. According to the manufacturer, they have their ingredients independently tested and certified as pure, which is always appreciated. The zeaxanthin and lutein have proven benefits, well-supported by long-term studies. These pills are small and easy-to-swallow. I swallow them quickly so I can't really comment on the taste. It seems to be a high-quality product. My only real issue here--and the reason I will not be buying this again--is the cost. You can easily find a lutein and zeaxanthin product here on Amazon at the same dosages and purity, for a price that is 84% cheaper (six times less) than the cost of this item. If you add in the astaxanthin, you can find two pills that are still 1/3 of the daily cost of this item. I don't find the convenience of taking a single pill worth paying a price that is 3 times higher than simply taking two (still very small) pills.
